The Apple that doesn’t flip
Technology is something that is constantly evolving, and the world of smartphones is never short of innovation. Be it advancement in processing chips or introduction of powerful cameras, smartphones have always brought a new edge associated with innovation. The introduction of touch screens and haptic based features in phones amazed the world, but one thing that no one thought would be the folding glass which would go on to defy the laws of physics. Yes, foldable glass is a real thing in the world of smartphones with Samsung and Motorola leading the way. One company which is a laggard as always and for the right reasons is Apple. iPhones are yet to come with a flip technology while some say that is work in progress. This may lead to people perceiving Apple to have lost ground in this innovative feature in the smartphone ecosystem.
Apple has always stood for bringing out the perfect product with minimal consumer complaints. It has always strived for such perfection and user experience that the always on feature has been introduced in this year’s iPhone 14, years after other smartphone makers introduced it. The simple reason behind this late mover’s strategy was due to the constant battery draining that was often coming with Always on feature in other phones. Apple has finally managed to crack that in iPhone 14 release by introducing LTPO (low-temperature Polycrystalline oxide) display which enables Apple phones to switch the refresh rate to save battery life. This perfection is what defines Apple and makes people stick to iPhone after purchasing their 1st iPhone.
Now, foldable phone by Samsung and Motorola have created a buzz around the world in terms of defying the laws of physics. The introduction of extremely thin glass coated with polymer has allowed the concept of foldable glass a reality, but it comes with its caveats. The coating of polymer allows the screen to be vulnerable to scratches and it is yet to be perfected. While Samsung Galaxy Flip has become a rage in South Korea and across other Asian countries, but the reviews have not been as encouraging as expected from such an innovation. All this brings Apple to the table for not yet entering the foldable phone category.
As per rumors, Apple is working on its version of foldable phone, but it is not expected to come out in the near future. There can be multiple reasons one can think behind this or even question Apple’s late mover strategy in this case. However, there is just one answer to this move.
Apple products are for the people and their experience with Apple products.
This answer indicates that apple will only bring a product into the market till it has perfected it with negligible chances of consumer complaints. While every new feature of iPhone stands true to this vision, the case for foldable phones is no different. Apple truly understands that users don’t only want a foldable phone. They are looking for a foldable phone which can cater to their quick on to go needs while being folded. At the same time, the full-size version of such a phone should not differ from an iPhone in any respect. There should be the same user experience as an iPhone while the edges should still have that aluminum touch coupled with the sleekness that people have started associating with a smartphone.
The other point where apple prides itself is the durability of the product. The foldable phones and the technology associated with them have not yet proven to be durable enough with experiments still ongoing. Durability is something which allows the users to stay put to the brand in terms of smartphones and that is the reason for a high repurchase of iPhone amongst its users.
While Apple is not flipping anytime soon, there will come a time when Apple dominates the foldable phone market as it achieves perfection, durability, and exception user experience with this new technology. We will not be surprised to see something as innovative as dynamic island with foldable phones once Apple makes its grand late moving entry into the world of foldable phones.
