New Week, Another Political Turmoil
The years 2023 and 2024 are laden with turmoil, political upheavals, and tensions across nations. If the ongoing wars and stand off between Middle East and Israel was not enough, turmoil within South Asian countries has only added to the spice of world peace. Last week was yet another week where there was turmoil in action in Bangladesh. The turmoil was so violent and evasive that the prime minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina had to resign and even flee her country. This was a sudden turn of events which captured the world’s attention and even prompted United Nations and Amnesty International to take notice. So, what really transpired and what will happen in the future?
There had been ever growing protests in Bangladesh by the student wings across universities over the reservation of public service jobs for descendants of freedom fighters. The common belief was that it gave undue influence and advantage to Sheikh Hasina and her ministers who were all coming from a background where their older generation had been part of the freedom struggle in 1971. The rise of student union and refinement of democracy has made people aware of their rights and this led to a call of the dissolution of this special privilege accorded to descendants of freedom fighters.
