Artificial Intelligence — The Problem Solver?
“Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history. Unfortunately, it might also be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks.” — Stephen Hawking
It has been over 2 years since the artificial intelligence storm officially took over the world. ChatGPT transformed the way humans operate and the concept of artificial intelligence simplified businesses and introduced the concept of realistic cost savings without even allowing the management to scratch their heads for long. It has come a s blessing in disguise and led to a predicament of being called a problem solver in all spheres of life. Years into this revolution and the begging questions is whether it really is a problem solver r has exacerbated the problems in a latent way.
Ai proponents like ChatGPT have ensured the humans don’t have to get stressed about writing articles, documents, or presentations. All they need to do is explain what they want, and a desired and professional output will be in human hands (of course in a digital version). AI has introduced the business to things they would have imagined achieving the best of the talents and spent umpteen hours to get the output. Name any problem and artificial intelligence powered by its years of trained data ensures that it comes up with a resolution of the problem which companies and humans can make use of. All this indicates that AI is the thing to stay, and it should be embraced with aplomb. Well, the problem solver is here to stay, but it is also resulting in certain outputs that are going unnoticed by humans and companies around.
1. Over dependency on simple tasks: AI is enabling humans to rely on it even for small tasks like writing an article or a quick email. This is leading to more time being spent on getting it perfect rather than enabling work to be done faster by providing the details that are required.
2. Diminishing Raw Thinking: Humans tend to think out of the box and their raw thinking has only led to outrageous ideas like SpaceX or McDonalds. The reliance on problem solver AI is causing the human minds to rest and not put intellectual stress on it to think of something extraordinary.
3. Standardisation in outputs: While AI has ensured that it helps with customized outputs for companies and humans, there is a big touch of standardization owing to it using trained data and not mixing mind and the heart together. This is leading to diminishing points of differentiation between companies and humans.
4. Hidden costs: While AI is believed to contribute to cost reduction by removing human redundancy, companies often ignore the development cost that comes into the picture coupled with the cost required for maintaining AI solutions ongoingly.
AI is a welcome technology and is here to stay, but as businesses evolve and humans continue their journey of evolution, there is a need to be vary of the harm AI can bring along with the benefits. There is a need for bringing AI governance into the picture and have segments of AI which are controllable by laws of nature and not the other way around. It is time to bring forth the right set of policies coupled with usage regulation which will allow it to be a problem solver and not another technology which played around with companies and humans and unearthed its own smooth departure to be replaced by another major version upgrade of AI.
